Feeding the poorest of the poor...
"I never look at the masses as my responsibility, I look at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. Just one, one, one. You get closer to Christ by coming closer to each other. As Jesus said, 'Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me.' So you begin...
I begin. I picked up one person. Maybe if I didn't pick up that one person, I wouldn't have picked up 42,000. The whole work is only a drop in the ocean. But if I didn't put the drop in, the ocean would be one drop less. Same thing for you. Same thing for your family. Same thing in the church where you go. Just begin... one, one, one!"
~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Brothers' Helpers Ministry began in 2003 when a handful of St. Bede the Venerable volunteers, active in the Peace & Justice Ministry, inspired by the Missionaries of Charity Brothers (MCB), joined together to assist MCB in their efforts to care for the hungry and homeless living in downtown Los Angeles.
MCB got their start in 1963 in India, inspired by Mother Teresa to work among the poorest of the poor, before branching into Los Angeles and other cities throughout the world. The MCB brothers work in a simple way, going into the slums and the streets to seek out the poor and the suffering, and when necessary and possible providing shelter.
Brother Andrew, co-founder with Mother Teresa, of MCB said "Each Brother is called by Christ to serve Him in the poorest of the poor on the streets and in the slums, those who live in the greatest misery and need.... The poor man is Christ; we serve and honor Christ when we serve our needy brother."
Thus, Mother Teresa and MCB stand as inspirations to Brothers' Helpers as we go about feeding and helping those in need in Los Angeles.
They will answer,
"Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison?" He will reply,
"Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me." Simply put, what we do is minister to each other in the
spirit of Mother Teresa and the MCB providing nutritious hot dinners to LA's most needy & homeless face-to-face.
